Moving your pet to Windsor

Driving is often the easiest way to move a pet between Toronto and Windsor. There is no airport cargo office, no airline crate rules and no flight to book. We pick up your pet at the door and drive straight to the new home.

It is a private trip, with no other pickups on the way. We stop for water on the way, keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature and send you updates until your pet arrives.

You can travel on the same day or on a different day. Many owners send their pet once the new home is set up, or after the movers have left.

  • Door to door the same day. No cargo office drop-off and no waiting at the airport after landing.
  • Calmer for many pets. One vehicle, one driver, and no loading onto a plane.

For cities further away, flying is faster and easier on your pet. See our routes by air and by road.

Weather and the best time to move

Windsor has the warmest climate in Ontario, with hot, humid summers and frequent thunderstorms. The humidex reaches 30°C or more on over 70 days in an average summer. Winters are cold, but snow cover comes and goes.

April, May, September and October are the easiest months, with mild weather; July and August are hardest because of humid heat and storms.

The drive between Windsor and Toronto

We follow Highway 401 through London, about 370 km and roughly 3.5 to 4 hours, with at least one stop for your pet.

Pet licence and local rules

Dog licences in Windsor are voluntary and are issued by the City Clerk's Licensing Division. A licence becomes required if Animal Control directs it after a bite or attack. Cats do not need a licence.

  • In City parks, dogs must be on a leash no longer than 1.5 metres unless they are in a leash-free zone.
  • Dogs and cats are not allowed on beaches, ponds, swimming areas, playgrounds or sports fields in City parks.
  • Owners must pick up after their pets in parks right away.

Where to walk your dog

Off-leash areas include Malden Park dog park (4200 Malden Rd., west end), Optimist Memorial Park dog park (1075 Ypres Ave.), Remington Booster Park dog park (2710 Lillian Ave.) and Elizabeth Kishkon Park dog park (1415 Banwell Rd., east end). Check the posted rules before you let your dog off leash.

The Riverfront Trail follows the Detroit River downtown, and the Ganatchio Trail runs through Riverside in the east end.

Dates to know in Windsor

  • Victoria Day (May): Backyard fireworks allowed the day before, the day of and the day after. Three nights of fireworks can stress a pet.
  • Late June: Summer Fest and the big riverfront fireworks shared with Detroit. Huge crowds fill the riverfront, roads close, and the show is very loud.
  • June 30 to July 4: Backyard fireworks allowed every night for Canada Day and the Fourth of July. Expect fireworks for several nights in a row, so keep pets indoors.
  • December 31: New Year's Eve backyard fireworks allowed. Fireworks at midnight can frighten pets.

Renting with a pet in Ontario

In Ontario a lease cannot ban pets, and landlords cannot charge a pet deposit. A landlord can still apply to evict if a pet causes real problems, or if condo rules ban pets.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Landlord and Tenant Board if you are unsure.

Toronto to Windsor: questions

How much does pet transport from Toronto to Windsor cost?
It depends on the two addresses, the number of pets and the extras you choose. Fill in the form and you see your price on screen in about three minutes. Applicable taxes are added, based on where the trip ends.
How long does the trip take?
The drive is about 3.5 to 4 hours between central Toronto and Windsor, plus stops for water. Your exact address and the traffic change it a little. We give you a pickup time and keep you updated on the way.
Can I ride along with my pet?
No. Pets only in our vehicles. You travel separately, and someone meets your pet at the drop-off address.
Does my pet have to be in a crate?
Not always. On the road, pets ride in a carrier, a crate or loose, depending on the pet. We agree it with you before the trip. If you do not have a carrier or crate, you can borrow one of ours.
My dog is a snub-nosed breed. Can you take them?
Yes. The airline breed rules do not apply on the road, so pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats and other snub-nosed breeds can travel with us. We keep the vehicle cool and plan the trip around the weather.
Do I need to license my dog in Windsor?
Not usually. Windsor's dog licence program is voluntary. It becomes required if Animal Control directs it after a bite or attack.
Can my dog go to the beach in Windsor?
No. Under the City's parks bylaw, dogs and cats are not allowed on beaches, ponds or swimming areas in City parks.
Why are there so many fireworks in Windsor in early summer?
Windsor allows backyard fireworks from June 30 to July 4 for Canada Day and the Fourth of July. The big riverfront show with Detroit also happens in late June.
