Moving your pet to London

Driving is often the easiest way to move a pet between Toronto and London. There is no airport cargo office, no airline crate rules and no flight to book. We pick up your pet at the door and drive straight to the new home.

It is a private trip, with no other pickups on the way. We stop for water on the way, keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature and send you updates until your pet arrives.

You can travel on the same day or on a different day. Many owners send their pet once the new home is set up, or after the movers have left.

Why drive instead of fly?

  • No airline rules. No crate size limits, no holiday or winter embargo dates, and no airline breed limits for snub-nosed breeds.
  • Door to door the same day. No cargo office drop-off and no waiting at the airport after landing.
  • Calmer for many pets. One vehicle, one driver, and no loading onto a plane.

For cities further away, flying is faster and easier on your pet. See our routes by air and by road.

Moving to London with a pet

Weather and the best time to move

Winters are cold and cloudy, and squalls off Lake Huron can drop a lot of snow quickly. Summers are warm to hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms.

May, June, September and October are the easiest months, with mild weather; December to February is hardest because of snow squalls, and July and August bring humid heat.

The drive between London and Toronto

We follow Highway 401, about 190 km and roughly 2 hours. In winter, lake-effect snow squalls can slow traffic near London, so we check the forecast before leaving.

Pet licence and local rules

The City of London requires a licence for every dog and cat, renewed every year, with licences expiring on December 31. The London Animal Care Centre handles licences, and dogs must wear the tag at all times.

  • Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 1.8 metres, except in a designated off-leash area.
  • No more than three dogs can be kept in one home, and there are limits on cats as well.
  • Off-leash areas are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and dogs need licence tags and up-to-date vaccinations.

Where to walk your dog

Off-leash areas include Greenway Off-Leash Area (Greenway Park, off Greenside Avenue), Pottersburg-FIDO Off-Leash Area (Pottersburg Park, Hamilton Road at Gore Road), Stoney Creek Off-Leash Area (Adelaide Street North at Windermere Road) and Caesars Off-Leash Area (941 Commissioners Road East). Check the posted rules before you let your dog off leash.

The Thames Valley Parkway is a paved 45 km path along the Thames River; dogs must stay on a leash.

Dates to know in London

  • Victoria Day (May) and Canada Day (July 1): Backyard fireworks allowed from dusk to 11 p.m. Neighbourhood fireworks can frighten pets, so plan a quiet evening at home.
  • Diwali (October or November) and Lunar New Year (January or February): Backyard fireworks also allowed from dusk to 11 p.m. These extra fireworks nights surprise many people, so keep pets indoors.
  • December to February: Snow squall season. Sudden heavy snow can close roads and slow a moving day.
  • July and August: Humid heat and thunderstorms. Thunder and heat are hard on pets, so early morning moves are safer.

Renting with a pet in Ontario

In Ontario a lease cannot ban pets, and landlords cannot charge a pet deposit. A landlord can still apply to evict if a pet causes real problems, or if condo rules ban pets.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Landlord and Tenant Board if you are unsure.

Toronto to London: questions

How much does pet transport from Toronto to London cost?
It depends on the two addresses, the number of pets and the extras you choose. Fill in the form and you see your price on screen in about three minutes. Applicable taxes are added, based on where the trip ends.
How long does the trip take?
The drive is about 2 hours between central Toronto and London, plus stops for water. Your exact address and the traffic change it a little. We give you a pickup time and keep you updated on the way.
Can I ride along with my pet?
No. Pets only in our vehicles. You travel separately, and someone meets your pet at the drop-off address.
Does my pet have to be in a crate?
Not always. On the road, pets ride in a carrier, a crate or loose, depending on the pet. We agree it with you before the trip. If you do not have a carrier or crate, you can borrow one of ours.
My dog is a snub-nosed breed. Can you take them?
Yes. The airline breed rules do not apply on the road, so pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats and other snub-nosed breeds can travel with us. We keep the vehicle cool and plan the trip around the weather.
Do I need to license my cat in London, Ontario?
Yes. Dogs and cats in London must be licensed every year, and licences expire on December 31. The London Animal Care Centre handles new licences.
