Moving your pet to Sudbury

Driving is often the easiest way to move a pet between Toronto and Sudbury. There is no airport cargo office, no airline crate rules and no flight to book. We pick up your pet at the door and drive straight to the new home.

It is a private trip, with no other pickups on the way. We stop for water on the way, keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature and send you updates until your pet arrives.

You can travel on the same day or on a different day. Many owners send their pet once the new home is set up, or after the movers have left.

  • Door to door the same day. No cargo office drop-off and no waiting at the airport after landing.
  • Calmer for many pets. One vehicle, one driver, and no loading onto a plane.

For cities further away, flying is faster and easier on your pet. See our routes by air and by road.

Weather and the best time to move

Greater Sudbury has long, cold and snowy winters, with average January lows around minus 18°C. Summers are warm and often humid, with average July highs around 25°C.

June and September are usually the easiest months, with mild weather; December to March are hardest because of cold and snowy roads, and midsummer can be hot and humid.

The drive between Sudbury and Toronto

We follow Highway 400 and Highway 69, about 390 km and roughly 4 to 4.5 hours, with at least one stop for your pet. In winter we check Ontario 511 for road conditions before leaving.

Pet licence and local rules

The City of Greater Sudbury requires a licence for dogs and cats 12 weeks or older, within seven days of ownership. Licences expire on December 31 each year.

  • Dogs must be leashed outside the City's off-leash parks, and leashes can be no longer than 2 metres.
  • A licensed cat is only allowed to roam if it is microchipped and spayed or neutered; otherwise cats must not be at large.
  • On GOVA Transit, pets must ride in a fully enclosed carrier placed on the floor at your feet.

Where to walk your dog

Off-leash areas include Minnow Lake Dog Park (Second Avenue North at Donna Drive, separate small and large dog areas), South End Dog Park (235 Countryside Dr, beside the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex) and Azilda Dog Park (3878 Municipal Rd 15, Azilda). Check the posted rules before you let your dog off leash.

The boardwalk at Bell Park along Ramsey Lake is a favourite walk, and the Rainbow Routes trail network offers many more.

Dates to know in Sudbury

  • July: Northern Lights Festival Boréal. Canada's longest continuously running music festival draws crowds, so expect busy roads and hard parking that weekend.
  • Mid-August: Up Here arts festival. This weekend festival brings visitors and crowds, so allow extra time on a moving day.
  • December to March: Winter driving season. Snow on Highway 69 and city roads can slow a road move, so check Ontario 511 before leaving.

Renting with a pet in Ontario

In Ontario a lease cannot ban pets, and landlords cannot charge a pet deposit. A landlord can still apply to evict if a pet causes real problems, or if condo rules ban pets.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Landlord and Tenant Board if you are unsure.

Toronto to Sudbury: questions

How much does pet transport from Toronto to Sudbury cost?
It depends on the two addresses, the number of pets and the extras you choose. Fill in the form and you see your price on screen in about three minutes. Applicable taxes are added, based on where the trip ends.
How long does the trip take?
The drive is about 4 to 4.5 hours between central Toronto and Sudbury, plus stops for water. Your exact address and the traffic change it a little. We give you a pickup time and keep you updated on the way.
Can I ride along with my pet?
No. Pets only in our vehicles. You travel separately, and someone meets your pet at the drop-off address.
Does my pet have to be in a crate?
Not always. On the road, pets ride in a carrier, a crate or loose, depending on the pet. We agree it with you before the trip. If you do not have a carrier or crate, you can borrow one of ours.
My dog is a snub-nosed breed. Can you take them?
Yes. The airline breed rules do not apply on the road, so pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats and other snub-nosed breeds can travel with us. We keep the vehicle cool and plan the trip around the weather.
Do I have to license my cat in Greater Sudbury?
Yes. Dogs and cats 12 weeks or older need a licence within seven days of ownership. A licensed cat that is microchipped and spayed or neutered is not considered at large.
Where are the off-leash dog parks in Sudbury?
There are three: Minnow Lake, the South End park on Countryside Drive, and Azilda. Each has separate fenced areas for small and large dogs and is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Can my pet wait in the car while I unload?
Not on warm or even mild days. The City warns that parked cars can become dangerous within minutes. Leaving a pet that way can break Ontario's animal welfare law.
