Moving your pet to Kingston

Driving is often the easiest way to move a pet between Toronto and Kingston. There is no airport cargo office, no airline crate rules and no flight to book. We pick up your pet at the door and drive straight to the new home.

It is a private trip, with no other pickups on the way. We stop for water on the way, keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature and send you updates until your pet arrives.

You can travel on the same day or on a different day. Many owners send their pet once the new home is set up, or after the movers have left.

  • Door to door the same day. No cargo office drop-off and no waiting at the airport after landing.
  • Calmer for many pets. One vehicle, one driver, and no loading onto a plane.

Moving to Kingston with a pet

Weather and the best time to move

Kingston has cooler summers and colder winters than most of southern Ontario. Breezes off Lake Ontario make it one of the windiest cities in Canada, especially near the water. Humid summer days can still bring a high humidex.

June and September are the easiest months, with mild, settled weather; January and February are hardest because of cold, wind and snow.

The drive between Kingston and Toronto

We follow Highway 401, about 260 km and roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, with a stop for your pet if needed. The 401 through Toronto is very busy, so we plan the trip around rush hour.

Pet licence and local rules

The City of Kingston requires a licence for every dog, and for cats in the urban area, renewed every year. The tag must be visible on the collar, and dogs need it to use an off-leash park.

  • Dogs must be on a leash unless they are on your own property or inside a designated off-leash park.
  • Dogs may not swim at a public beach, swimming pool or wading pool.
  • One person may bring no more than two dogs into an off-leash park, and dogs stay leashed until inside the double gate.

Where to walk your dog

Off-leash areas include Memorial Centre (303 York St., fenced and fully accessible), Meadowbrook Park (444 Kingsdale Ave., fenced), Rotary Park (1280 Coverdale Dr., fenced) and Grass Creek Park (2991 Hwy. 2 E., fenced). Check the posted rules before you let your dog off leash.

The paved K&P Trail starts at Confederation Park, and the 8 km Downtown Waterfront Pathway follows the lake; keep dogs on a leash.

Dates to know in Kingston

  • July 1: Canada Day fireworks over Lake Ontario from Confederation Park at 10 p.m. Downtown is busy all day, and the fireworks can scare pets.
  • July and August: Summer heat warnings. The City bylaw says pets cannot be left outside during a heat warning unless they have proper shelter.
  • December 31: New Year's Eve with fireworks at Confederation Park and Springer Market Square. Loud bangs downtown at night can frighten pets.
  • January and February: Cold, windy winter weather and cold warnings. Pets need shelter during cold warnings, and wind off the lake makes it feel colder.

Renting with a pet in Ontario

In Ontario a lease cannot ban pets, and landlords cannot charge a pet deposit. A landlord can still apply to evict if a pet causes real problems, or if condo rules ban pets.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Landlord and Tenant Board if you are unsure.

Toronto to Kingston: questions

How much does pet transport from Toronto to Kingston cost?
It depends on the two addresses, the number of pets and the extras you choose. Fill in the form and you see your price on screen in about three minutes. Applicable taxes are added, based on where the trip ends.
How long does the trip take?
The drive is about 2.5 to 3 hours between central Toronto and Kingston, plus stops for water. Your exact address and the traffic change it a little. We give you a pickup time and keep you updated on the way.
Can I ride along with my pet?
No. Pets only in our vehicles. You travel separately, and someone meets your pet at the drop-off address.
Does my pet have to be in a crate?
Not always. On the road, pets ride in a carrier, a crate or loose, depending on the pet. We agree it with you before the trip. If you do not have a carrier or crate, you can borrow one of ours.
My dog is a snub-nosed breed. Can you take them?
Yes. The airline breed rules do not apply on the road, so pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats and other snub-nosed breeds can travel with us. We keep the vehicle cool and plan the trip around the weather.
Does my cat need a licence in Kingston?
Only if you live in Kingston's urban area. Dogs need a licence everywhere in the city. Both are renewed each year, and the tag must be visible on the collar.
Can my dog swim at a Kingston beach?
No. The City's animal bylaw does not allow dogs to swim at public beaches, swimming pools or wading pools.
What do I need to use a Kingston dog park?
Your dog must wear a valid licence tag, stay leashed until inside the double gate, and be under control. Each person can bring no more than two dogs.
