Moving your pet to Regina

Sending your pet on its own as airline cargo is the fastest way to get from Toronto to Regina: about 3 hours in the air, instead of days in a car.

You can fly on the same day or on a different day from your pet. Some owners fly first and send their pet a day or two later, so the new home is ready. We look after everything in Toronto, and you choose who collects your pet at the airline's cargo office in Regina.

We choose the flight and the timing that are easiest on your pet. Every booking depends on airline space, the time of year and the breed rules, so we confirm the flight with the airline before anything is final.

Airline rules that matter on this route

  • Health certificate: Air Canada needs one for every pet, WestJet for some pets. We tell you which applies and by when. See vet health certificate for flying.
  • December and winter: holiday embargoes limit space in late December, and some aircraft take no pets in the coldest months. See winter and holiday embargoes.
  • Breeds: snub-nosed and strong breeds have extra airline rules, and pit bull type dogs cannot travel through Pearson. See snub-nosed breeds and flying.

Moving to Regina with a pet

Weather and the best time to move

Regina has cold, dry winters and warm, sunny summers, and it is Canada's sunniest capital. Temperatures can swing from about minus 40°C in winter to over 40°C in summer heat waves.

May, June and September are usually the easiest months, with mild days; December to February are hardest because of deep cold, and July and August can bring heat waves.

Arriving at Regina International Airport (YQR)

Cargo is handled in a building near the passenger terminal, beside Tutor Drive. Pets are collected at the airline's cargo office, not at the passenger terminal. From the airport to downtown Regina is about 5 km, about 10 minutes.

Pet licence and local rules

The City of Regina requires an annual licence for every dog and cat. Dogs must wear the tag at all times; cats with a microchip or readable tattoo do not have to wear it.

  • Since April 2026, dogs must be on a physical leash in all public places, except inside off-leash dog parks.
  • Dogs are welcome in all city parks if they are leashed and licensed, and picking up after them is mandatory.
  • On Regina Transit, pets can ride if they are in a closed carrier.

Where to walk your dog

Off-leash areas include Cathy Lauritsen Memorial Off-Leash Dog Park (2110 Forget St, partly fenced, along Wascana Creek), Mount Pleasant Off-Leash Dog Park (750 Winnipeg St N, fully fenced, with a small dog area), Māmowimīwēyitamōwin Off-Leash Dog Park (3750 McKinley Ave, fully fenced, with a small dog area) and Horizon Station Off-Leash Dog Park (4701 E Buckingham Dr, fully fenced). Check the posted rules before you let your dog off leash.

The paths around Wascana Lake in Wascana Centre are Regina's classic dog walk, with dogs on leash at all times.

Dates to know in Regina

  • July 1: Canada Day at Wascana Centre. Tens of thousands gather around Wascana Lake, and fireworks start around 10:30 p.m. or later, which can frighten pets.
  • Late July to early August: Queen City Ex at the REAL District. This big summer fair brings crowds and heavy traffic around the exhibition grounds for several days.
  • December to February: Deep winter cold. Cold snaps can make outdoor waits risky for pets, so keep pickups and handovers short.

Renting with a pet in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan's official sources do not set specific pet rules for renters. Landlords can make reasonable written rules, and a security deposit is capped at one month's rent with only one deposit allowed. Ask the landlord about pets before you sign.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Office of Residential Tenancies if you are unsure.

Pickup areas in Toronto

How to help your pet settle in

Toronto to Regina: questions

How much does it cost to ship a pet from Toronto to Regina?
It depends mostly on your pet's size: a bigger pet needs a bigger crate, and the airline charges by crate size or weight. Your pickup address in the Toronto area, whether you need a crate from us and the time of year count too. Fill in the form and you see your exact price in about three minutes. Applicable taxes are added, based on where the move ends.
How long is the flight from Toronto to Regina?
The scheduled flight time is about 3 hours. Your pet is checked in at airport cargo about 3 hours before departure and is usually ready for pickup a few hours after landing, so plan for most of a day from start to finish.
Who picks up my pet in Regina?
Someone you choose: you, a family member or a friend. They collect your pet at the airline's cargo office at YQR, and we send them the address, the opening hours and the air waybill number. Collect your pet as soon as it is ready: a pet not collected within 4 hours is moved to a kennel (or a vet) at your cost.
Can my dog be off leash in Regina parks?
No. Since April 2026, dogs must be on a physical leash in all public places. The exceptions are the City's off-leash dog parks, such as Mount Pleasant and Cathy Lauritsen Memorial.
Does my cat need a licence in Regina?
Yes. All cats and dogs need an annual City licence. A cat with a microchip or readable tattoo does not have to wear its tag, but it still needs the licence.
Can I walk my dog around Wascana Lake?
Yes, on leash. The Provincial Capital Commission requires dogs to be leashed everywhere in Wascana Centre, to protect wildlife and keep dogs off thin ice in winter.
