YYZ to YDF
Toronto to Deer Lake Pet Relocation
We move dogs and cats from Toronto to Deer Lake on Air Canada Cargo flights. We pick up your pet at home, supply the airline crate if you need one, handle the paperwork and check your pet in at Pearson.

Moving your pet to Deer Lake
Sending your pet on its own as airline cargo is the fastest way to get from Toronto to Deer Lake: about 2.5 to 3 hours in the air, instead of days in a car.
You can fly on the same day or on a different day from your pet. Some owners fly first and send their pet a day or two later, so the new home is ready. We look after everything in Toronto, and you choose who collects your pet at the airline's cargo office in Deer Lake.
We choose the flight and the timing that are easiest on your pet. Every booking depends on airline space, the time of year and the breed rules, so we confirm the flight with the airline before anything is final.

Airline rules that matter on this route
- Health certificate: Air Canada needs one for every pet. We tell you the date it must be done by. See vet health certificate for flying.
- December and winter: holiday embargoes limit space in late December, and some aircraft take no pets in the coldest months. See winter and holiday embargoes.
- Breeds: snub-nosed and strong breeds have extra airline rules, and pit bull type dogs cannot travel through Pearson. See snub-nosed breeds and flying.
- Pickup on time: collect your pet as soon as it is ready. A pet not collected within 4 hours is moved to a kennel (or a vet) at your cost.

Moving to Deer Lake with a pet
Weather and the best time to move
Deer Lake, in western Newfoundland's Humber Valley, gets heavy snow, about 314 cm a year. January nights average around minus 11°C and can get much colder. Summers are pleasant, with average highs around 21 to 22°C.
June to September are the easiest months, with mild weather and clear roads, while the deep snow from December to March makes winter the hardest.
Arriving at Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF)
Pets are collected at the airline's cargo office, not at the passenger terminal. From the airport to downtown Deer Lake is a few minutes' drive (Corner Brook is about 40 minutes away).
Pet licence and local rules
The Town of Deer Lake requires a licence for every dog and cat over 4 months old. The licence lasts for the owner's lifetime, and the numbered Town tag must be worn on a collar. Nearby Corner Brook requires a licence for all dogs aged 3 months or older.
- In Deer Lake, a pet must be tethered, penned or contained unless it is on a leash held by someone who can control it.
- Owners must pick up after their pet right away, including in parks, on trails and on the beach.
- In Corner Brook, dogs may not be off their owner's property unless on a leash.
Where to walk your dog
The Humber Valley Nature Trail is a flat, 5.1 km out-and-back walk along the Humber River, and dogs are welcome on leash; in Corner Brook, the Corner Brook Stream Trail winds through downtown.
Dates to know in Deer Lake
- December to March: Heavy snow season. The area gets about 3 metres of snow a year, so winter roads and airport pickups can be slow.
- Late February to early March: Corner Brook Winter Carnival. This 10-day winter festival in nearby Corner Brook brings extra events and traffic.
Renting with a pet in Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador landlords can ban pets in the rental agreement. They cannot charge a separate pet deposit, only one security deposit of up to three quarters of a month's rent.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Residential Tenancies Office if you are unsure.
