Moving your pet to Edmonton

Sending your pet on its own as airline cargo is the fastest way to get from Toronto to Edmonton: about 4 hours in the air, instead of days in a car.

You can fly on the same day or on a different day from your pet. Some owners fly first and send their pet a day or two later, so the new home is ready. We look after everything in Toronto, and you choose who collects your pet at the airline's cargo office in Edmonton.

We choose the flight and the timing that are easiest on your pet. Every booking depends on airline space, the time of year and the breed rules, so we confirm the flight with the airline before anything is final.

Airline rules that matter on this route

  • Health certificate: Air Canada needs one for every pet, WestJet for some pets. We tell you which applies and by when. See vet health certificate for flying.
  • December and winter: holiday embargoes limit space in late December, and some aircraft take no pets in the coldest months. See winter and holiday embargoes.
  • Breeds: snub-nosed and strong breeds have extra airline rules, and pit bull type dogs cannot travel through Pearson. See snub-nosed breeds and flying.
  • Pickup on time: collect your pet as soon as it is ready. A pet not collected within 4 hours is moved to a kennel (or a vet) at your cost.

Weather and the best time to move

Edmonton winters usually sit between -5 and -15°C, but can drop to -30 or -40°C. Ears, paws, noses and tail tips can get frostbite, and ice melt can hurt paws. In spring and summer, wildfire smoke can drift in and linger for days.

Late May, June and September are usually easiest, with mild weather, while December to February bring extreme cold and July and August can bring wildfire smoke.

Arriving at Edmonton International Airport (YEG)

Pets are collected at the airline's cargo office, not at the passenger terminal. From the airport to downtown Edmonton is about 30 km, 30 to 45 minutes via Highway 2.

Pet licence and local rules

Every cat and dog over 6 months old, even indoor pets, needs a City of Edmonton pet licence, renewed every 12 months. The licence comes with a City pet tag.

  • Dogs must be leashed outside designated off-leash areas, including on river valley trails.
  • Keep dogs off frozen ponds and the river in off-leash areas; the City has put up sculptures as a reminder.
  • On ETS buses and LRT, pets must stay in a proper carrier for the whole trip.

Where to walk your dog

Off-leash areas include Terwillegar Park (south bank of the river, end of Rabbit Hill Road), Buena Vista Park (north bank of the river, next to Laurier Park), Jackie Parker Park (southeast Edmonton) and Mill Creek Ravine (upper ravine, gravel trail only). Check the posted rules before you let your dog off leash.

The North Saskatchewan River valley trail system is the city's main walking network, and Mill Creek Ravine is a favourite with dog walkers.

Dates to know in Edmonton

  • July 1: Canada Day fireworks over the river valley around 11 p.m. Road closures in central Edmonton and loud fireworks, with delays two hours before and after.
  • Late July: K-Days at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, with fireworks each night. Busy roads in the northeast and nightly fireworks for about ten days.
  • August: Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival in Old Strathcona. Big crowds and tight parking around Whyte Avenue during the festival.
  • December to February: Extreme cold. Moving days need short outdoor waits, warm vehicles and paw care for ice and salt.

Renting with a pet in Alberta

Alberta landlords can refuse pets or set pet rules in the lease. A refundable pet deposit counts toward the security deposit limit of one month's rent, and non-refundable pet fees are allowed if agreed.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and contact the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service or Service Alberta if you are unsure.

How to help your pet settle in

Toronto to Edmonton: questions

How much does it cost to ship a pet from Toronto to Edmonton?
It depends mostly on your pet's size: a bigger pet needs a bigger crate, and the airline charges by crate size or weight. Your pickup address in the Toronto area, whether you need a crate from us and the time of year count too. Fill in the form and you see your exact price in about three minutes. Applicable taxes are added, based on where the move ends.
How long is the flight from Toronto to Edmonton?
The scheduled flight time is about 4 hours. Your pet is checked in at airport cargo about 3 hours before departure and is usually ready for pickup a few hours after landing, so plan for most of a day from start to finish.
Who picks up my pet in Edmonton?
Someone you choose: you, a family member or a friend. They collect your pet at the airline's cargo office at YEG, and we send them the address, the opening hours and the air waybill number. Collect your pet as soon as it is ready: a pet not collected within 4 hours is moved to a kennel (or a vet) at your cost.
Does my cat need a licence in Edmonton?
Yes. Every cat and dog over 6 months old needs a City of Edmonton licence, even if it stays indoors. Licences are renewed every 12 months.
How do I keep my dog safe in an Edmonton winter?
Keep outdoor time short on very cold days, since paws, ears and tails can get frostbite. Wipe paws after walks, because ice melt can irritate them.
Can I take my pet on the LRT?
Yes, if your pet stays in a proper carrier, such as a cage, for the whole trip. Certified service dogs are the exception.
